About Dr. Cowan

 

 

Dr. Cowan is a board certified psychiatrist specializing in the evaluation and treatment of individuals suffering with mental health problems.  She has offices in Bethesda, MD and Washington, DC. 

Dr. Cowan grew up in Montgomery County, Maryland.  She attended the Holton-Arms School and then Georgetown University.  She went on to the Georgetown University School of Medicine, after which she moved to Baltimore to complete her residency training in psychiatry at Johns Hopkins Hospital.  She continued her training further by pursuing a fellowship in forensic psychiatry at the University of Maryland.

After completing her training, Dr. Cowan began working at the Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center.  While working at Perkins, Dr. Cowan served as the Director of Admissions and the Director of the Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship Program for the University of Maryland, based at Perkins.  In 2006, Dr. Cowan began a private practice, where she has been working since.

Dr. Cowan is an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of mental illnesses.  She has an extensive and nuanced knowledge base regarding depression, bipolar disorder and anxiety disorders.  She has a great interest in helping manage mental health issues in women who are pregnant, planning on becoming pregnant, or are in the post-partum period. She is proficient at identifying and addressing areas of a person's life that might be contributing to their suffering. She works with patients ages 16 and older.  She is a dedicated medical professional who provides care ranging from general to specialized, state of the art treatment.

Dr. Cowan is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and is a member of the American Academy of Psychiarty and the Law.  She is also a member of the Washington Psychiatric Society and Maryland Psychiatric Society.  She serves on the faculty of Johns Hopkins' and University of Maryland's departments of psychiatry.
